New Vid of me at the Quarry Art Center. Many thanks to Angela Riesterer for posting this on You Tube.

My life as a landscape painter has its roots in my youth. I was often inspired by the beautiful oil paintings I would see in museums and nicer homes.  I believed at some point with effort I would be able to capture the beauty that I saw in nature.  My artistic journey has taken me through a career as an illustrator and graphic designer, eventually bringing me from California to New Zealand.

What I love most about New Zealand are the big open skies (it is no wonder that it"s called Land of the Long White Cloud).  The majestic totara and other native trees that populate the landscape speak to us through our emotions, engaging our vision and spirit.

To portray sky, land and sea, I approach my work using a tonalist vocabulary.  Tonalism is a movement in painting that predates impressionism. The primary goal of tonalism is to capture the poetry and emotionalism of the landscape, this is done, not through the depiction of grand vistas but through the painting of intimate everyday rural scenes.

I have endeavoured in my work to reveal some of the hidden beauty that is often taken for granted, this site encapsulates that journey...
